Research Talks with researchers who are not members of PP
Accepted
Create a new series of events to interact with new researchers, learn about their work, and discuss how it connects with the ongoing work of PP. Participatory democracy researchers often contact PP to learn more about our work and connect with people from the research board. Especially junior researchers and Ph.D. students are getting in touch. These talks would be a way to more efficiently respond to requests from outside researchers and also to more efficiently and collectively benefit from their work and build broader connections. Organize 3-4 such meeting (Research talks/Research dialogues) a year. The invited person would give a presentation and we would engage in conversation, perhaps with some one being the host/moderator. The meetings could be open to all members of PP.
Cost estimate: $15,000

Perhaps we can do this in a low cost way by inviting people to present their work at a research board meeting. That would not cost anything.
I like this idea a lot but wonder if there's a way to collaborate with partner institutions to do it a lower-cost way, as Carolin suggests, and to make use of PP's greatest strengths in other ways. The Gittell Collective I work with at CUNY could help to work on this, for instance.
It would be wonderful if we can make this in partnership with some other institution! The main question to put a price tag is setting PP's work time (eg. calendar planning, outreach and promotion, setting up infrastructure, etc) which I think is challenging to define at this point. Perhaps the price tag could range from 3,000 (working with partners) to 15,000 (working with no partners)?
